The Future of Safe Innovation: Animal-free prediction of long-term health hazard

2 December 2026

🗓️ Wednesday, 2 December 2026 · 15:00–18:00 ·  Followed by networking until 21:00

📍 City Hotel Maribor, Ulica Kneza Koclja 22, 2000 Maribor, Slovenia

New materials are reaching the market faster than safety testing can follow. Assessing long-term health hazards still relies largely on animal studies that take years, require hundreds of animals and can cost up to €1 million per material. Regulators, industry and citizens share an interest in faster, mechanism-based alternatives that protect health at least as well.

Join us for the presentation of one of the first approaches of its kind: InFiniteLungDT®, an in-vitro learned digital twin that predicts the long-term evolution of inhalation-related lung inflammation from just 24 hours of cell monitoring. The technology was developed by Infinite Biotech, a deep-tech spin-out of the Jožef Stefan Institute (Slovenia). Its predictive capacity was pre-validated within the EU project nanoPASS against in vivo data from more than 4,400 exposures.

Afterwards, leading experts from the legal and regulatory framework, public health, research and industry will discuss what animal-free safety assessment will look like, how we can get there as fast as possible, what is already possible within the current regulatory framework, and how new approach methods can enter routine decision-making — accelerating innovation while maintaining a high level of protection for workers, consumers and the environment.
